London, 12 August 2026 – Boku, the local payments partner for global commerce, today announces it is live in South Africa via Capitec Pay, opening access for global merchants to one of the most widely adopted local payment methods in South Africa, used by customers because it is simple and trusted.

Capitec, South Africa’s largest retail bank by client numbers, serves 26 million clients, including 15 million app users. This digital footprint positions Capitec as a key payment partner for online merchants. For Boku, this represents a significant opportunity to bring additional global merchants onto the platform. A major global technology platform has already committed to adopting Capitec Pay, with further merchant launches expected to follow.

In the past financial year, Capitec reported that e-commerce transactions, including Capitec Pay, increased by 32% to 643 million. This points to how local payment methods can drive incremental growth by reaching consumers who do not rely on cards, even in mature card markets.

Further supporting this, Capitec’s largest international merchant now processes nearly half of its online payments through Capitec Pay compared to its monthly card volumes, showing the growing role of local payment methods in the South African digital payment ecosystem.

Capitec Pay is the latest addition to Boku’s expansive global local payment method network and is aligned with the company’s strategy to drive revenue diversification by adding new merchants and strengthening its position in new and existing markets. Through a single integration to Boku’s platform, the world’s largest merchants can access more than 200 local payment methods globally, reaching global customers where they are, and through the methods they prefer – including now in South Africa. This network incorporates licensed cross border money movement and currency conversion, comprehensive regulatory and operational infrastructure, combined with embedded bundling programmes to support subscriber acquisition.

Stuart Neal, CEO, Boku, said: “By bringing Capitec Pay onto Boku’s platform, we’re continuing to expand our local payments network in one of Africa’s most important digital commerce markets. South Africa is a significant growth opportunity for many of our merchants, and through a single integration to Boku they will be able to reach more consumers through payment methods people already know and trust.

Capitec Pay’s performance shows why this matters as locally aligned payment experiences can improve conversion, unlock transaction growth and help global merchants participate more effectively in fast-evolving digital markets. We’re excited about the opportunity ahead and look forward to seeing what this partnership can deliver for consumers across South Africa.”

Francois Viviers, Executive Head of Marketing and Client Experience at Capitec, said: “Capitec’s philosophy is to ensure that our customers experience simple, affordable and innovative services. Capitec Pay is just one of the many ways we bring that simplicity to life, offering clients a payment experience they already know and trust. Capitec Pay continues to see strong adoption and engagement from customers, alongside positive performance outcomes for merchants. Through this partnership with Boku, we are expanding our trusted payment experience by giving customers access to international merchants in a simple and seamless way.
